There is one road onto Key Biscayne and there is no second one. The Rickenbacker Causeway runs roughly four miles from Brickell across Virginia Key to the island. It crosses the William Powell Bridge and the Bear Cut Bridge. Indeed, everything that happens here depends on it.

An incident on the causeway or a lane closure at Bear Cut can add twenty to forty-five minutes. So can a king tide on the approach or an event on Virginia Key. In fact, there is no alternative route in existence. We quote the drive off the causeway and the tide, not the map. From the Village Green, Miami International is fourteen to seventeen miles away. That is twenty-five to forty minutes when everything behaves, forty-five to sixty when it does not. We leave earlier from Key Biscayne than we would from an equivalent address in Coral Gables. Then we tell you why.
Tolls on the Rickenbacker are collected southbound only, so you pay going onto the island and not coming off it. In fact, every vehicle in our fleet runs a transponder. That is roughly half the plate rate for a two-axle vehicle.
The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne closed in May 2025 for a hundred-million-dollar renovation. It reopened in December that year, its first full renewal in nearly twenty-five years. The reopening brought a new restaurant lineup, an expanded spa and a rebuilt racquet program covering tennis, pickleball and padel. Group business, weddings and incentive travel have been ramping back ever since.
At the same time, the old Silver Sands Beach Resort at the south end has been closed. Demolition is underway, and an ultra-luxury residential project is planned for the site. In practical terms, the Ritz-Carlton is now the island’s hotel. Other Key Biscayne listings are mostly condominium or vacation-rental inventory rather than true hotel rooms.
The Ocean Club, Grand Bay Residences, Key Colony, and Mashta Island all have controlled access with their own arrival protocols. So do the Cape Florida enclaves. Give us the resident’s name and the building or unit at booking and clearance takes seconds.

Crandon Park at the north end is Miami-Dade County land, the Village of Key Biscayne is the incorporated municipality in the middle, and Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park at the south end carries its own vehicle entry fee and gate hours.
There is a K-8 center on the island and a Catholic school through eighth grade, but no high school — public high-school students cross the causeway every school day, and we run many of these crossings as standing accounts.
The Fourth of July parade runs along Crandon Boulevard, the island's only arterial, and closes it; the Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies, Winterfest and the Lighthouse Run add more dates worth planning around.
In February 2026 the Village Council approved burying the island’s electrical feeders and telecom lines across the entire Village. Indeed, it is a project measured in tens of millions and years. Work proceeds zone by zone, starting with the southernmost neighborhoods, and includes trenching, transformer pads, swale repair and repaving.
Expect rolling residential street closures for a long time. Zone-by-zone knowledge of which streets are open this month is the kind of thing we track. In fact, we are here every week.
Unlike Sunny Isles or Aventura, Key Biscayne has no northern-airport case to make — MIA is both closest and fastest. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood is thirty-three to thirty-seven miles and forty-five to seventy minutes. DJT (still PBI to most GPS units) sits to the northwest, and Opa-locka Executive sits to the north. In fact, both are roughly twenty to twenty-four miles away. So the choice usually comes down to which FBO your operator uses.
The causeway’s western end lands you in Coconut Grove and beside Vizcaya, with Mercy Hospital nearby. Virginia Key sits in between. The Marine Stadium there has been derelict for years. In August 2026, Miami voters approved an operating agreement toward its restoration. When it reopens, event traffic will sit directly between this island and the mainland. Indeed, we are watching that closely.
MIA is closest and fastest at fourteen to seventeen miles; Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood and DJT/Opa-locka Executive each run twenty to thirty-seven miles depending on which airport or FBO your trip calls for.

More than the mileage suggests. There is no alternate route off the island, so a single incident on the Rickenbacker cannot be driven around. We typically add a meaningful buffer over what we would use for a comparable mainland address. We will tell you the departure time we recommend and the reason for it.

Yes. Bill Baggs is a state park with a per-vehicle entry fee and gate hours. Crandon is county land with its own parking rules. So we plan those as timed drop-offs rather than open-ended stops. In fact, No Name Harbor and the Cape Florida Lighthouse are inside Bill Baggs.
